Every Mile Creates Change

From leading trail races to mentoring youth, Johnny Runner’s mission is rooted in community and impact.

“Constant forward motion carried me through cancer, and it carries me still.”

Bear Canyon Trail Run

The Bear Canyon Trail Run is a community-driven race held each October on the rugged trails of the Lone Peak Wilderness. With distance options of 5K, 11 miles, and 20 miles, runners take on steep climbs, fast descents, and stunning views of the Wasatch.

But the heart of this event is its impact: every year, all proceeds go directly to support an individual or family facing cancer. Founded by John, who turned his own cancer journey into a mission of giving back, the race brings people together to transform miles on the trail into meaningful support.

This is more than a race—it’s a way to connect, contribute, and make every step count.

Lululemon Ambassador

The lululemon Ambassador program is designed to amplify leaders who inspire through authenticity, courage, and connection. For John, being an Ambassador means representing more than athletic performance—it’s about sharing his story of perseverance, creating space for others to grow, and leading with heart.

With access to resources like lululemon’s Community Initiatives Fund, John partners with his local store to bring events and grassroots projects to life. Whether it’s organizing community runs, raising funds for a cause, or encouraging someone to take their first step on the trail, John uses his role to turn his love of running into something that uplifts others.

Huntsman Cancer Institute

“Constant forward motion carried me through cancer, and it carries me still.”

John is a proud Huntsman Hero, continuing his commitment to the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) through fundraising, volunteerism, and community engagement. He provides ongoing support for the annual Huntsman Sports Festival and leads his own campaign — Miles for Mantle Cell — to raise funds for mantle cell lymphoma research.

Every mile John runs honors the care and research that gave him a second chance. His mission is to help others on their health journeys, raise awareness for early detection, and fuel the research that saves lives. Through movement and community, John continues to prove that forward motion belongs to all of us.

Roots to Runners

Roots to Runners is a community trail running club founded by John with a simple mission: to make trail running accessible, welcoming, and fun for everyone. We start at the roots — inviting newcomers to begin with hiking, then progress through hike-run sessions, and eventually build the confidence to run trails.

Along the way, members gain strength, connection, and joy in nature, while discovering the meditative and healing benefits of time on the trail.

Guided by our mantra, Hike it – Love it – Run it, Roots to Runners is about more than fitness, it’s about building community, exploring together, and creating an approachable path toward 5K and 10K trail fun runs.

Trail Work & Stewardship

John is committed to keeping local trails accessible and sustainable for everyone. He holds a volunteer service agreement with the Salt Lake District Forest Service for trails in the Lone Peak Wilderness and partners with the Cottonwood Trails Foundation to organize trail work sessions. These projects range from 4-hour evening shifts for runners meeting race requirements to broader community service initiatives and volunteer opportunities for anyone who wants to give back. John’s efforts reflect his passion for stewardship and supporting the trail community.
